Fifth wheel trailers are among the most popular trailers in the towable market. They range in size from the smaller more spartan models, all the way up to large models resembling luxury condos on wheels. The large fifth wheel trailers rank among the most luxurious of the towable trailers, second only to the large, luxury Class A buses and motorhomes. The fifth wheel is recognizable from the downward pointing hitch that is mounted underneath the front overhang, attaching into the bed of a pickup truck over the rear axle.
Fifth wheels are very popular with fulltimers, with their split level design. They are the easiest to maneuver and pull of the towable trailer group, offering a stable platform by virtue of the hitch mounting arrangement. Most models offer huge storage bays underneath, large living spaces with multiple slideouts, and the characteristic raised ceilings, sloping towards the upstairs level. The front upper level most usually sports an upstairs bedroom, though one can find models showcasing an upstairs lounge or even a second bedroom for the kids.
These units can now be purchased with one, or even up to even 6 slideouts, greatly enhancing the ergonomic comfort and enjoyment of the occupants. Options that can be had run the gamut of built in washer/dryers, multiple flat screen TV's, large entertainment centers, computer workstations, or even built in infrared saunas in their own slideout!
Pros:
- Maneuvering and stable tow-ability are superior to travel trailers especially in the larger lengths by virtue of the hitch being mounted in the pickup bed. This arrangement emulates the large cargo carrying semi-trucks on the roads today, virtually eliminating sway and providing a solid towing platform. Some fifth wheel hitches allow an 88 degree turning radius for backing into tight spots or taking tight corners.
- Unhitching a fifth wheel can be very easy to do when at camp, allowing one to use the truck to run errands, or to go sight-seeing. Some models come with automatic leveling jacks making it even easier, and less strenuous to setup.
- The bed of the pickup can be equipped with covers or additional storage boxes for carrying tools and other creative uses. Some truck boxes even come built to house a generator, important for those doing a lot of boondocking.
Cons:
- Passengers cannot ride in the trailer when towing in 29 states. Pickups are not as comfortable to ride in as vans if there are additional passengers besides a traveling couple, though the modern short bed pickups with four doors, are spacious and are assuming the role of a half van, making them very comfortable with multiple occupants.
- Bedrooms with full stand up height can be non-existent in the mid-length or very small models. Even in some of the larger models, the bedroom height will be 6 feet, making it difficult for taller people. If you are living full-time in your unit, be sure the bedroom ceiling height is comfortable for you long term.
- All towables have a disadvantage compared to motorhomes in that people will have to exit the tow rig to enter the RV, an inconvenience in inclement weather. This can also be a safety concern when parked in rest areas or boondocking as in a motorhome you can drive off without exiting, should the need arise.
Cost: Fifth wheels can be bought for as little as $12,000 for the really small models, to well over $100,000 and up, especially in the coaches more suitable for full-time living, and depending on the features desired. There are also a number of custom fifth wheel manufacturers catering to the fulltime RV purchaser, whereby one can customize the rig to suit the taste.
Fifth wheel trailers are an ideal match to the fulltime couple wanting the easiest to tow, and yet obtaining the maximum living space available, in the shortest length possible. Realize that 4-5 feet of the trailer will preside over the pickup bed when towing, saving towing length. Every conceivable option can be had, or even custom built units can be purchased that reflect the buyer's personal taste and options desired. They are the most popular unit for the fulltime, snowbird crowd for good reason, with their superior ease of operation and expansive living spaces. Can Florida trailer park manager/owner force me to give up a lot I've already paid for in advance?
My inlaws have purchased a mobile home in a little "snowbird" community in Florida. They pay monthly lot rent - no problem there, BUT....they also leased the adjacent lot to accomodate their fifth wheel RV, motorcycle, whatever they need it for. They paid a year's rent upfront. Landlord/manager comes to them this week and says "Oops we made a mistake. You have to give that lot back to us. Some other guy has been on our waiting list for 2 yrs, and wants that lot for his boat." I say "tough noogies". Can they do that?
Tough noogies indeed. If the lease is already signed, and moreoveer rent already paid, then that's it. Tough luck for the landlord and the guy on the waiting list. The landlord will need to wait for your inlaws lease to expire first. Of course, at this point, your inlaws can bargain. "We'll give the lot back to you if you take $200 off of our monthly rent on our current mobile home pad for the next 12 months."
