What, in your opinion, is the hardest and most physically challenging sport in the world?
Please back up your answer with a logical explanation. In my opinion, gymnastics is one of the hardest and most physically challenging sports in the world. Gymnasts do a ton of strength, flexibility, and endurance training. Higher level gymnasts often work out 8 hours a day or more. Gymnastics also takes tons of constant pounding on the body. It takes a lot of concentration, talant, and strength to be able to flip through the air on a four inch beam and fly from bar to bar or in men's gymnastics to do apparatus such as the pommel horse and the rings. Gymnastics is a sport that constantly challenges you, and there is always a new skill to learn. This is my opinion. Do you agree? If not, what sport do you think is the hardest?
I would argue that wrestling is the most physically challenging sport. The MMA fighting might top it, but with the striking aspect the athletes have a chance to rest.
Wrestling is exhausting. Unlike other sports, there is almost no chance for pacing in wrestling. A contender must exert himself fully the entire length of the match. If a wrestler does not use his full strength at any moment, his opposition will defeat him. Those matches typically last three minutes. To give you a comparison, wrestling is similar to running your absolute top speed for the duration of a distance race, or holding your maximum bench press weight three inches off your chest for three minutes. Either task is technically impossible, but it is required in wrestling.
Aside from incredible endurance, wrestling requires strategy, flexibility, coordination, strength, and you are physically competing against another top athlete. No other sport I know requires all attributes of physical fitness while additionally expecting the competitors to perform without rest and facing them against an opponent who is actively opposing them.
