infomation on portable camping toilets?
Im building a camper van and need info on toilets, whats the best make and design, how the chemicals work and where to dipose of the waste?
Easy to answer your questions.
1. There are several good makes and I suppose Portapotti is the best known but there are several others. Ours is made by Campinggaz.
2. As to design, they all work on the same system. They consist of two parts, a fresh water reservoir and a container for waste. These are connected and rubber seals make sure that there are no leaks.
3. The chemicals: You need two different chemicals, one goes into the fresh water reservoir and makes it smell nice. It is usually pink in colour. The other is put into the waste tank to kill bacteria (and the smell) and is usually blue. Nowadays, some site owners insist that you use eco-friendly toilet fluids which are often green.
4. How to use: Arrive at site, fill fresh water reservoir and add pink liquid to the water.
Open the sliding "valve" which separates this section from the waste tank and add blue liquid to waste tank. Close sliding valve. Ready to use.
5. Use: Lift lid, deposit "waste matter" open sliding valve and press the device (usually at top right corner of the toilet) which sucks water from the fresh water reservoir and flushes your loo. Close valve.
6. Emptying: Make sure that the separator valve is securle closed then pull out the (usually) metal pull-handle which causes the top and bottom halves to separate. Using the handle, carry waste tank to the designated disposal point. (Almost all sites have one. If not, use a toilet) Remove the cap from the outpouring tube (which has to be turned thro' 90 degrees to function) and tip down the loo. There is usually a push-type valve which allows air into the reservoir and allows the contents to flow out more easily. Try to avoid getting splashed.
Replace cap, push tube back to original place and walk back to caravan. Easy!!
One other thought: many caravans and camper vans have battery-operated toilets which are built in to the vehicle and connected to the battery but I think that the simple one described above is more suited to your needs.
