How do I calculate the braking distance for a car on dry road?
The car had been traveling at 40 mph when its driver applied the brakes. What is the distance needed?
The coefficient for dry road from my experiment is .642
I think i'm suppose to use the equation
d= -vi^2/2a
but when does the use of the coefficient come in?
V=Vo - a*t
D=Vo*t-a*t^2/2
When braking without slipping,
F=m*a
m*g*0.642 = m*a
a=0.642*9.81=6.3 m/sec^2
convert mph to m/sec we get Vo= 17.8 m/sec
Then, 17.8 = 6.3 * t hence t =17.8/6.3=2.83 sec
D=17.8*2.83 - 6.3*2.83^2 /2 =50.37-25.23=25.14 m
