How to you handle a big dog off leash attacking yours that's on leash?

My dog walker (14 y/o) had the scare of her life today when she was walking my cocker and a big dog (on his own and off leash) jumped on my dog. She was unable to separate them, my dog was so scared he was foaming at the mouth, a passer by came to her help and finally the owner noticed the commotion and came to grab his dog, he did not ask my dog walker if she was ok, he did not apologize or say anything, he just went away with his dog.

I took their address and will report them first thing in the morning but my question to you is how does one can handle such a situation? Would it be legal to carry pepper spray on us when we walk our dogs?

You and your dog walker should do what you have to in order to ensure your dog and your dog walker (since she's young) is safe. Definately carry pepper spray, it is legal in most States.

I usually give one warning before I spray.

I've had a elderly dog brutally attacked by a large dog and I made a promise to myself that it will never happen again and I will protect my dogs at all cost.

edit:

I almost forgot, there is a product that is not pepper spray. It is called Direct Stop and its sold on the CleanRun website. It supposed to be able to stop other animals also like raccons, snakes, cats & possum. It is supposed to stop the animal in it's track without causing it pain.
