Hitch Rails

Washington DC at Thanksgiving?
Well, my children all have plans for the Thanksgiving holiday, therefore, I will not have any plans. So I have decided to take a trip to Washington DC for the day. I will be traveling by train to arrive and depart for the trip. My questions are... will most things be open for this holiday? Will the bus and rail systems be moving about? Mostly everything that I want to see is outside and I do not plan on eating nor shopping. I am in hopes that I can pull off this trip for around $140.00 with the round trip train travel costing $128.00. I hitch hiked across the US when I was 16 so I know how to go places with out spending a lot of money and yet still having a blast. So any ideas you may have that you would like to pass on would be great. I will have 7 hours and 45 minutes to do everything I can. I am not beyond eating somewhere that will not cost an arm or leg but close enough I can walk from the memorials.
That sounds like a great idea - the weather will be mild on Thursday and most of the museums will be OPEN. Amtrak trains will run on Thanksgiving day, and the DC metro/ subway system will be operating on a Sunday schedule (from 7am to midnight on thursday). See http://www.wmata.com for subway fares, maps and schedules.
You're right - it'll be tough to find restaurants or stores that will be open (especially in the afternoon) - but my advice is to bring a picnic, and some snacks with you just in case. A lot of folks in this area go out to eat on thanksgiving - so you will see a few places that are open (it's best to call ahead and/or make a reservation). Something in or around Union Station might be nice/ and some of the museums have great cafe's.
If you've got just a few hours, here are a few places I suggest...
-- The U.S. Botanical Garden (indoor and outdoor). It's open from 10am-5pm everyday, including weekends AND holidays. http://www.usbg.gov/your-visit/index.cfm
-- National Museum of Women in the Arts. My fav. http://www.nmwa.org/
-- The WWII memorial (newly built) is a great place to walk around and relax.
Also I'd suggest checking out the washington post city guide, they have a special section of things to do thanksgiving day/ and info on what's open. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/
Have fun!
