Why does my grill have a small flame even though there's still propane in the tank?
Every now and then my grill will act like it's almost out of fuel (low flame, etc) even though the propane tank still has plenty of gas in it. If I lift the tank I can feel gas sloshing around inside, and it's still heavy. The last time it did it I disconnected the tank, checked all the hoses, reconnected it and it seemed to work again, but the grill is less than a year old and is in very good shape. I've also had the same problem on my previous grill. When I get new propane, I swap the tank, so I've had the same problem with different tanks and different grills. This time I was able to get it to work again, but previously I've had to swap half-full tanks. When I swap the tank it always works again. What gives?
These valves contain an excess flow valve designed to severely restrict the flow of propane if the hose ruptures or is cut or burnt.
When you go to light the grill, make sure the grill controls are all off. Then the cylinder valve needs to be opened VERY slowly about 1/8th of a turn and then wait a few seconds.. This has allowed a bit of fuel to flow through and "charge" the line with propane again. If you open it too quickly, the excess flow valve can falsely sense that something is wrong and will shut off. This is exactly why people sometimes change cylinders and think they got a bad one from the supplier when the grill wont start or the flame is very low. There is nothing wrong with the cylinder. It is just the safety feature doing it's job! If this happens, close the valve, disconnect and reconnect the hose again and start over!
Don't worry! You certainly aren't the first person this has happened to! I wish I had a doller for every time I've explained this to someone over the last 15 years or so since these valves came on the market... :^)
