Does a dog breeding have to tie to conceive?

I'm trying to breed my female lab. I currently have her with male. She's heavily in heat. I estimate on Sat. 3-6-10 she will be on her 11th day in heat. The male is mounting her but does not seem to be following through. Meaning he's mounting for a few seconds at a time maybe a little longer. Do they have to tie or is a few seconds enough, lol.

It probably means she's not ready to breed. If there is ejaculation, there is just about always a tie. No tie probably means no ejaculation, which probably means she's not ready to stand through the whole mating, which means she's not even ready to conceive. Could the male introduce sperm into the female and conceive without tying? Yes, but it's unlikely.

You need to take both dogs to the vet, get them properly evaluated for breeding purposes and have the vet figure out whether your female is in estrus (when she is fertile) or just proestrus (when she bleeds and is attractive to males but is not yet fertile). Then you need to have a good chat with the vet about how to properly breed these dogs and care for the pups.

But I second what everyone else is saying: if you are not responsible enough to have already learned the answers to these questions, or at the very least to take these questions to a vet instead of to a bunch of strangers on the internet whose qualifications you know nothing about, then you aren't responsible enough to bring a litter of puppies into this world and you should spay your dog.
