If You Separate An Electron Pair, And Do Something To 1, Will The Other Be Instantly Affected?
I Learn This When Reading Up On Quantum Mechanics where it said that if you separated on electron pair and took one to the opposite end of the universe the other would be immaediately affected.
is this actually true?? and can anyone please help explain how it can do this as what connnects the two electrons that apparently travels faster than the speed of light?
Tankyou
This is one of the oddities of quantum mechanics. All available (knowable) information about a particle is contained within a so-called system state (sometimes called a wavefunction). The system state is a function of probabilities-- probabilities of being in any particular state. According to 'standard' quantum mechanics, simultaneously all of the states available to the particle are inhabited until measurement. However, things get interesting with a pair of electrons.
There is a principal in quantum mechanics called the Pauli Exclusion Principal which states, "No two fermions (particles like electrons, protons and neutrons) may exist in the same quantum state. Each of our electrons must have different quantum numbers... in this particular case, the spin of each of the particles are different. Spin is a strange quantity. It can be thought of as a basketball spinning... if you wrap your fingers of your right hand in the direction of the spinning, your thumb will point in the direction of the angular momentum. Spin, as it were, can either be pointed 'up' or 'down'. This analogy is completely incorrect, the electron is not actually spinning, however, it allows us to sort-of picture what is happening.
So, given what we have thus far, we know that electrons cannot have the same set of quantum numbers, and a quantum particle does not intrinsically have a definite set of quantum numbers until measurement. So, if we isolate a pair of electrons, separate them by an arbitrary distance and then measure one what happens? According to standard quantum theory the particle we measure did not have definite quantum numbers... the act of measuring forced the system to a particular state. Then, according to the Pauli Exclusion Principal, we know immediately the quantum numbers of the other electron. This is usually done with the spin quantum number. Somehow by measuring one of the electrons, we force the other into a state... Einstein did not like this idea at all and called it "Spooky Action at a Distance."
Apparently, faster than light the electron we measured forced the other electron into a single state. This seems to violate Relativity in that this happens instantaneously, and somehow they 'communicate faster than light'. However, no information is being communicated. The measurement of spin is not deterministic per se. You have an equal chance of having an electron being spin-up of spin-down. All you know is that once you measure one, you know what the other has to be. Strange. The mechanism for this is unknown, it is one of the many oddities inherent to quantum theory.
