Ring Surface
What is the surface area of a cylindrical ring if its outside diameter is 16 mm and its inside diameter is 10?
To find the area of the ring, you need to find the area of the whole circle and then subtract the smaller circle from it.
The formula for the area of a circle is A = π * r^2
Using the outside diameter, 16, the radius is half of this, so r = 8 and the larger circle's area is A = π * 8^2 = 64π
Using the inside diameter, 10, the radius is half of this, so r = 5, and the smaller circle's area is A = π • 5^2 = 25π
So to find the area of the ring, subtract 64π - 25π = 39π = 122.5 mm^2
