Why not display the poverty in China?

The people who live in Shangai, Beijing, or Hong Kong are the rich Chinese. According to nationmaster.com, the GDP per capita of China is only $1700.

Why does our media only focus on rich China? They only represent a tiny fraction of the total Chinese population. Hundreds of millions of Chinese live in poverty, in rural areas, with lack of basic health and sanitation systems. I've been through many areas of China where the words "squalor" and "utter poverty" don't seem too far off. Think huge swaths of central/western China, and many of these were NOT necessarily that remote.

Why do we always talk about rich China when it only represents a small fraction of their total population? I don't get it.
If a nation like India can display its poverty, in conjunction with its economic achievements, why can't China? This question is for the second poster.

you are quite right,actually i am a Chinese student,i wonder your nationality. i live in the middle part of china,there are many poor areas in our province,and the live of the people there is really hard.the gap between the poor and the rich is really big.i think you know that.but why the western media just show the rich part of china,it is obvious they do not want others to keep up with their countries,just like the relations between people.and as a Chinese i know it clearly that we still have a lot to do in order to improve our lives.
