What is a solution in science the definition i have makes no sense?
my definiton is a homogeneous mixture of tow or more substances unitormly dispersed throughout a single phase
Let's break it down. To have a solution, you must have:
- 2 or more components: I think this is pretty clear
-Homogeneous/uniform dispersion: this means your composition must be uniform throughout. If I have a liter of a 1 molar salt solution, then I can take a 10mL sample of it and it will still be 1 molar. Likewise the 10 mL sample should have the same density as the whole liter.
-Single phase: imagine an ice cube floating in water, there is a phase boundary there, I can distinctly tell where ice ends and water begins. Likewise, if I have 50/50 oil and water, they will separate and there will be a distinct layer of oil on top of a distinct layer of water. in both cases these two layers won't have the same properties (i.e. composition, entropy, enthalpy, etc). In order to have a solution, you can only have 1 phase.
