Who protects independent contractors from businesses who demand free work to obtain paying jobs?
Working as an independent contractor in the construction trades who is told I have to unload the weekly semi-trailer load of materials for free in order to be given installation jobs. If I don't show up to unload the truck, I don't have a job. But I like what I do and don't want to quit. I am also tired of being forced to work for free so the owners don't have to pay someone to do it.
well, being an independant contractor makes you self-employed. you have a few choices, you can either report them to the labor dept. and stop working for free (and probably guarantee you lose the contract). tell the company you would like to re-negotiate the current terms of your agreement to include a fee for unloading the truck. What I would do, is tell the company that they don't work for free, I don't either and if they aren't going to allow me to bid on future work because I don't unload a truck, then they can find someone else. the bad thing is, unloading a truck is a job that pays at or slightly higher than minimum wage.
