Floor heating vent - Can I cover it? Animal dangers?
My apartment is in an old victorian, the heating is a single large metal floor vent. Even with the heat turned off there is still hot air coming up through the vent. Is there something I can cover it with so that it isn't heating up my already hot apartment?
Also, when winter comes and I do use it, will the metal be too hot to walk on? I have cats and am worried they will burn themselves.
First, the metal wont burn you in the winter. In fact if its really cold out you might enjoy standing on it barefoot to warm up.
Second-most of those have a sliding attachment to close them up-so that the air doesnt blow through all the time. Look for a dial of some form on the vent. If it doesnt have one or is jammed you might need a new one. Just measure it, go out to your local hardware store and pick up a new one. Chances are its just attached with several screws. Or if you dont want to go to all that trouble of replacing it just throw something over top of it in the summer when you are not using it-it wont hurt anything. Throw a rug over it or something.
One last thing, are you certain your furnace is all the way off? I find it odd that hot air would still be coming up through it. Double check. Go down by the furnace if you can get to it, stand there for around 5-10 minutes and see you hear it kick on.
