Water molecule is polar......?
Why is water usually used to clean things (clothes, dishes, car, etc.)? And why do we need to add soap on occasion to clean certain messes (like grease)?

Water is simply a plentiful and convenient solvent. Detergents act to disrupt weak molecular interactions between dirt and clothes, to make the molecules more soluble in water, allowing water to lift them away. In order for anything to dissolve in water, it must be polar because water is a polar solvent. Detergents also act to bind to the dirt, and impart either a positive or negative charge, depending on the particular detergent you use.
Grease is very nonpolar, and requires a surfactant to solubilize it.
