When the wheels on a plane fails to initiate, how does it land?
The landing gear wheels on the plane does not come out. How can it land with all other parts working?
Generally, the nose gear is the landing gear that doesn't lock.
The main gears are that heavy that the combination of gravity and their weight will lock them into place.
So here's the scene: You're on your final approach in a B737 and the captain asks for the gears to be lowered.
The two main gear lights turn green but the nose stays red, the captain tells the tower this and the aircraft is put into a hold for the captain to attempt a gravity drop of the nose gear and it fails to lock.
Therefore the captain now has to make an approach.
So with his main gears locked he make's the approach, the advantage of this is the fact that an aircraft lands of the main gears first.
So the aircraft lands on the back wheels and the captain must keep that nose as high as possible and for as long as possible until the plane effectively stalls.
The captain then gently eases the plane onto the runway, this alone will the slow the aircraft with the friction as remember the spoilers can't be deployed as this will push the aircraft down onto the runway.
So the aircraft rolls to a halt and the fire brigade come and cool the heated nose down.
