How do you get a very flat surface between metal parts?
I have to join two steel parts together. They must be flat to each other. The surfaces are round about 4 inches in diameter.
They will be joined together by a central threaded rod.
I would guess I need a flat surface to start and some way to grind or smooth the surfaces. Thanks for any help.
You could lap the surfaces on a piece of glass with some wet/dry sandpaper. I do this to flatten the bottom of handplanes, and start with 150 grit and go on up in grits. You can get to a mirror finish if you are patient and go 150, 220, 320, 600, 800, 1500, etc. The auto parts store might have the very highest grits for auto body finishing if you can't find them in general hardware.
I would flatten first then center drill for the threaded hole. You might throw things a little out of square if you drill first, then flatten.
